So it doesn't have to be on the forepeak, right? I've seen lights on the mast, but I didn't consider the thing on the forepeak being the same. Is there an advantage to it sometimes being on the forepeak vs. on the radar mast?

Thank you again, gentlemen, for being so generous with your knowledge.

If you notice the Westport, it is on the hardtop, as if saying (We are just at regulation length!) while when the boat is longer than 50m by a good bit, it would be better to have it as fore as possible and as Lars stated some boats have retractable or folding fore masts just for the looks or practicality maybe. For the advantage, if you are navigating at night and wanted to keep a safe distance, the position of the fore mast, or for that matter the light configuration will give you better judgement of the vessel length and how to safely maneuver around her.

Ah! Thanks! Maybe the sight analogy wasn't so bad after all.

Just for clarification here are a few of my personal photos. Here is Fincantieri "Serene" and Westport 164 "Harmony".

    * you see the mast on the Westport with the white nav lights

    * On Serene you see it deployed on arrival during the morning

    * and retracted at night while at berth.

In essense, just because you may not see a forward mast on a large yacht you shouldn't conclude she doesn't have one, it may just be retracted as that is how most of them are being built these days, on telescopic 'poles'.

"Harmony" doesn't have one I suppose because she is a shade under 50-meter.

Another example, the Amels 171/77/80 and 212, forward mast is actually a crane on the bow with the nav lights incorporated, when steaming at night or in other conditions they may raise this crane vertically to display the steaming light.

On "Pegasus V" (ex. "Princess Mariana") she has a fixed forward mast so it will naturally be there all the time.

So, the first one is the Westport (with all the wires) and the second and third ones are Serene, right?

BTW, just to test my eye here, is Serene about 80 meters?

"Serene" is 134-meters around 442-feet long. The last two photos are of Serene, The first is of "Harmony", the mast with the white nav lights are atop the hardtop on the pole. it is the white pole to the left in the photo.

So apparently, my eyes need practice. I'll have to be a little more studious.

Many pictures will play on your eyes, sometimes the angles are off or there are reflections or the owners of the images stretched it or compressed it unnecessarily.

    Cheers,

The appropriate yacht news outlets are now reporting the same.

"Pegasus V" wonder what her new name will be... That owner didn't have her for that long at all.

After a couple years being under refit, the old "Princess Mariana" is now called "Lightning" and sports a light grey hull and white superstructure. She was under refit at Amels. Photo Wim Kosteen

"LIGHTNING" has been under seatrials recently. In fact she just completed her second day of trials the other day.

Apparently she is still called "Pegasus VIII"? I thought that she was renamed after the refit. Well here you can clearly see she departed Gibraltar as Pegasus VIII.
