Hi, Again this is purely heresay. I deal with a boat that is there now and has been since November. I have had several conversations with the Captain who is someone have known since the late 1980's. He paints a picture of a concerted effort by the local business community to push this drugs/money line. He told me that he was even told in a restaurant that the two English people shot in their beds last year were in the wrong. Seemingly they had won some money in the Casino and this is why they were targeted. If this line which is being pushed were really accurate don't you think the Police would publish it freely? It would after all remove any shadow of a doubt about the random violence which this and other robberies which occur but don't get this amount of international press coverage seeming to be endemic there or not.
That depends on whether the police are in on the deals. Can never rule out corruption. Also if the police lack of being able to catch these drug lords may look like incompetance and therefore they would rather not publish it.
Like I said, this is what I heard over and over again by people who are there, by everyone I talked to about it. I don't think they would make up a story just to make one up. These are all Captains and crew that are there, not local Antiguan's. Why would other respectable Captain's bring drugs into the picture if they did not see things that would point to that? Maybe they have seen them involved in that leading up to this incident who knows. They have no alterior motives. Drugs may or may not have been involved, nobody knows for sure. And, I am not writing this as fact. I do know that the local newspapers are about as reputable as the National Enquirer when it comes to writing the facts in most of these Carribbean nations.
Wow. I'm just trying to wrap my head around a Captain going ashore to buy dope for himself, and or himself and his crew. That's something I have a hard time grasping. It's just an inconceivable idea for me.
Wow, there is a lot of scuttlebutt going on here at the expense of a dead man's reputation. Even the word 'addiction' is being bandied about. Sounds a bit like the movie "Reefer Madness". Maybe it's time to quote from Ken's earlier post: " That seems to be to most authoritative statement that's likely to come until there are court transcripts.
having lived in the islands for 15 years, I've seen how rumors get out of control... doens't take long for someone "respectable" to fall in the trap and give it credibility. surprising that captains dont' know any better. i didn't know the victim, but spreading these kind of rumors on the web is plain wrong.
Follow Up? Does anyone have a follow up to this crime. The last I heard was that that Sylvester Lindsey appeared before the magistrate and was continued held with no bond. But the story ended there. Thanks
There is an update on ANU observer. He got 22 yrs. I can't post link from my IPAD http://www.antiguaobserver.com/?p=70764 I played around and got it to work after all
122 years would have been better, but some form of justice has been served, which is a good thing indeed.
I believe that any form of justice should be enough to make others with the same criminal spirit not commit such a thing, after all for the killer, nothing he will ever do would really forgive what has already done. Just a thought. Cheers.
Revolving Door of the Criminal Justice System, meet 3ala2. 3ala2, meet Revolving Door of the Criminal Justice System. I figured an introduction couldn't hurt.
Alfred- Don't take it the wrong way. Perhaps harsh, but IMO, not unwarranted. I'm a firm believer in an eye for an eye in capital crimes of this nature. Others are of course welcome to their opinions without prejudice. Cheers-
Not being familiar with the Antigua penal system - does this mean he will be inside for 22 years, or will he be able to apply for parole after say, 11 years?
I guess 22 is 22, and as I heard, a "Clean-up" goes every few years to clear some bunk for new inmates, so a life sentence is served in around 8-10 years! Can anyone define crime anymore?! Cheers!!
