    Thinking about this 65' Custom

Boat Manufacturers - New And Used Boats For Sale - BoatTrader.com 6

Has a frozen gear box, plus one genset is down. Lots of boat means lots
could go wrong. Interior soft goods are trashed...

    1. Any guidance on a gear box rebuild cost?
    2. Seems under powered at 2 350 hp diesels.
    3. 10% windows are leaking... Whats the cost to reset these? Also strange
    how flimsly these are...
    4. Would like to put wood floors in.. Any noise issues here?

Love any input from someone who's done a major refit..

Not a real good link, as that is a big empty white page.

A little more info may help. Please check your links before posting.

Yes ... 65' ... Lots to go wrong. I just did the side salon windows on my 54' Bertram. The frames were $8,800. Installation was $20,000 including some gorgeous teak trim around the windows.

You will find that anything remotely significant starts at around $10,000

So, that gearbox ... Part could be a good deal if it's only driving 350hp ... But before all is said and done, you'll be close to $10k. Genset ... 16 kw .. $20,000 will be pretty close.

    It's ugly.

And ... Hauling, storage all based in .. By the foot. Count on $650 just to pull her out of the water.

Soft goods ... Cushions, bedding, curtains, canopy etc. You would have an easy time losing $30,000 there.

Be specific and the feedback can be more precise. Since links are not permitted on the site (I think), tell us some key words in the listing so we can find the boat you are talking about.

And if the numbers are out of whak, just choose something smaller.

A suggestion may be to find a knowledgeable person to go over all the areas of the boat and collect quotes from reputable craftsmen in the respective areas of expertise.

As far as the wood floor/decking is concerned, the sound can be minimized with properly installed insulated subflooring on which the final decking installed.

I hope this helps somewhat. Happy New Year!

... with a boat this big... (current boat is 40').. I know the marine stuff is clear.. engine stuff is expensive..., but I worry even more about 3 fuel tanks.. bad gauges? Crapped out auto pilot?

The boat doesn;t have the typical canvas soft goods.. so I'd think new carpet, furniture is going to be the same as residential? no?

Jet pumps are a major hassle and make the boat rather difficult to use till you get used to them. What kind of money are we talking about for this thing?

Work up a budget, then triple it. That may get you close to what you're really facing. The cost of refit today is higher than ever. Plus, its a boat. The "while you're in there" repair stuff gets way out of hand very quickly. You could spend a fortune on that boat and it will still be what it is. There's likely a lot of good reasons why she has been for sale for many years, and now is a repo.

The boat market is soft enough that even beautifully maintained, high quality, well known builder yachts are selling at bargain prices. Instead of spending your time and money rebuilding a sow, spend the time shopping for a nice boat that's already nice. They're out there, but it takes work beyond pointing and clicking to find them. Good luck.

Thanks SeaEric - I agree that a seriously discounted yacht is prbably only truly value is you are comfortable with the condition its in.

Although the banks are rumored to be make some pretty low ball deals...

Heck I'd love to find one ready to go for $175K to $250K @ 60'....but I'm not spending that on aging Bayliner...

Agreed. But what about an aging 60' + Hatteras? Some have sold in that same price range. Take your time and go look at some boats.

Bear in mind that whatever you buy now, you will want to re-sell some day.

I know for sure that you can find an older 53' Hatteras MY in good condition in that price range and if you look fairly well, you can probably find a 58' Hatteras MY in good condition for that. Honestly I'd rather go for a well built recognized brand, rather than an off-brand that needs that kind of work.

I've always liked the lines of that boat too.

Seems to me that it's been on the market for the better part of its life. You would need to be comfortable with the jet drive - most definitely not for everyone. Also, a Surveyor who is expert in aluminum hulls is a must. Expect more than your fair share of surprises. I'd bet that a proper basic refit to serviceable condition could exceed the asking price.

You may be aware of it's colorful ownership history...

That's a crazy boat history. Wow... Wonder if the loaded gun is still on board:)

How do check clear title on a boat? Coast Guard?

Boat has been used as a condo for last several years and according to the harbor master hasn't left the dock. Heck the engine room is the cleanest, nicest smelling room in the boat.

What's the deal with jet drives? Less control?

Less control, Less maneuverability. Horrible economy at slower speeds than cruise speed.....especially displacement speed and lower.

And if you do buy this boat, keep all of that in mind when you have to sell it. Jet boats aren't for everybody.

That was a fascinating read and the fact that they let that scoundrel get away .. law enforcement at its best. Busy jack booting the marijuana smokers while letting the big criminals walk.

Talked to Jet Drive Company and bottom line is this boat is way too underpowered for their jet drives to be efficient and maneuverable.. So once you did get it fixed up, you might not have much
