    There is a difference between licences and permits, a permit is for one move only and according to Mr Noble at Ft Myers CBP the move must be made only between the ports specified with no allowance for side trips etc. $37.50. and according to Tampa customs, a failure to call in on arrival can mean forfeiture of the vessel.

    An annual licence allows for cruising at your leisure.

    Regardless of which one you have, if you want to move and stop overnight from one Customs jurisdiction to another, you MUST have one or the other. As per Ft Lauderdale office.

    Call me a liar if you wish. I have paid my taxes from day one and always obtain an annual license, I respect the laws of the Nation which i am visiting.

    Yawn ... most people call a cruising license a cruising permit, the terms are interchangeable in normal usage. A "premit to proceed" is a specific document. It is difficult to confuse the two and trying to use that as a means to backpedal on your original erroneous post is a smokescreen.

    Case closed.

    Yeah, it is. Where does it ask about Florida taxes? Florida can say whatever it wants to but that doesn't change one sentence of the CBP rules regarding cruising licenses.

    Once you go down the road of answering questions that haven't been asked you get to the point where you are at now.

    Dennis doesn't know the difference between a permit to proceed (AKA "outbound clearance") and a cruising license so he fell into the same trap. you guys need to learn how to read before you go around ranting and whining about being caught with your thumb up your after perpendicular.

    I had to obtain a "permit to proceed" last year from Ft Myers Customs office at the airport in order to proceed to Tampa..Marmot, you are dead wrong and just can't stand being told so. It had nothing to do with "outbound" when did you last get a permit to cruise or proceed??
    I get involved in this annually and have a smidgen of what's involved.

    A couple of days ago.

    I have the original CBP Form 1300 Vessel Entrance or Clearance Statment(s) for both outbound and inbound at my keyboard as I type this. I also have a nice fresh United States Customs and Border Protection - Cruising License - with them.

    My last permit to move was obtained in Jan 2011. The office in Ft Myers,Officer Howard Noble informed me personally that no annual licence would be issued unless the vessel went foreign etc, as I wanted to move to Tampa, he said all I needed was a permit to move and no stops allowed on the way. When departing to the Bahamas on my last trip, Customs informed me that no departure procedure was necessary.

    All I can do is what Customs tells me, not what some guy on forum says and that's what I will do every time.

    The poster asked "WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF A CRUISING PERMIT EXPIRE". Having to pay Florida Sales Tax would be a consequence.

    Who said the boat is in Florida?

    How do you know so much about the tax and ownership status of the boat in question?

    Are you a psychic or a State tax detective assigned to track that boat or something?

    If the boat is in Missouri when it expires is Florida going to demand taxes?

    How does Florida even know when the license expires?

    Does CBP provide the State with copies of every cruising license issued in the State?

    Will Florida chase the boat all up and down the East Coast and demand taxes because the license was issued in Fort Lauderdale?

    Why do you keep trying to answer questions that haven't been asked?

    You don't have to answer those questions though, most of us can figure it out.

    Yeah most of us can figure out what s behind these questions

    In case you haven't noticed the OP home ports are in Florida, so it s perfect normal for this answering to mention sales tax consequences

    And by the way, states are desperate for revenue and have been cracking down on uncollected sales tax, not just Florida... Nothing wrong about mentioning state tax implications.

    I'm assuming it's Florida because the poster is located in Florida.

    If it's in Florida, Florida will find out and send a nice letter saying they owe 6% for the sales tax and a 6% fine. The owner the boat I was taking care of got a nice letter saying that he owed $120,000 in taxes. Florida will send a letter to the registered owner at the registered address and 90 later they confiscate the boat. Florida is relentless at finding out who owes taxes. I don't know if the CBP alerts Florida or not.

    If the boat is in Missouri, Missouri would demand taxes.

    Really? So now you are a Missouri tax expert as well as being able to divine the location and tax status of an unidentified boat and owner?

    As I said a permit to move or proceed is required to go between ports that have customs offices, it is not specifically an outbound clearance only, so Marmot, am I wrong again ?? even though I got one this Jan to move from Ft Myers too Tampa, or are you incorrect.??

    WTF does one thing have to do with the other? Just cause *your* rich friend (or ex-friend) is a b--ch, doesnt at all imply that that is "just how right ppl are"...

    I guess someone's got an issue with wealthy ppl though...I'd recommend you not generalize so much, you will often be wrong....:rolleyes:

    Good God! All most sorry I asked. :)

    For the record, the vessel is in FL, the owner is a citizen of the US from what I understand, I knew about the potential state tax consequences, I was just wondering if there could be any potential consequences with US Customs due to letting the permit laps for so long, how big of a deal it might be to get a new permit and I am not running the boat.

    Pretty easy. Leave the Country and come back. Talk to the marine desk and ask them the duration you need to leave, but chances are if it's been expired for a while you may only need to show them you were in another country.

    It would be easy if the Marine Desk in Ft. Lauderdale would answer their phone or return calls. They have done neither, repeatedly.

    The boat left the dock and headed out of the country tonight.

    Fort Lauderdale, never EVER answers the phone nor do they ever return a message. Try the Key West office, I get them on the phone instantly without even going through a switchboard and they're very helpful.......
