Boating skills don't come natural too all See the youtube video below, is funny Princess 62 Yacht crashing in Dock in Læsø Harbour Denmark - YouTube
pretty typical of the average boater... whenever i see someone using his bow thruster to make a simple turn instead of rudders and/or gears, i always get worried!
I don't see any indication of using a bow thruster. If anything it looks like he was using only the stbd screw and figured he needed speed for the rudders rather than judicious applications of thrust.
Just got home where I have audio on the computer (don't have it connected at work) and can hear what certainly sounds like a thruster but it coincides with the wash at the stern and there is no wash at the bow so he must have been steering with the stern thruster ... weird, maybe he only had the stbd engine and thought he had to keep it turning ahead??? In any event it sure looks like an easily avoidable incident. Impaired driver?
That's what I saw. I think the sound is the starboard engine and not a bow thruster. I would assume if he was using a bow thruster he would be pushing the bow starboard and there would be some prop wash visible from the thruster. What's more, after he hits the breakwater it looks there is finally prop wash visible from the port engine. I would guess either he was drunk or otherwise impaired or is just a moron.
If you watch the motion of the boat, ripples from the bow thruster and the wash of the stern thruster, as you hear the thrusters you see that he thrusts the bow right then way far left which he tries to correct by using his stern thruster to push the stern left and then left again. At this point he seems to realize the error of his ways and went back to the bow thruster and pushed it left instead of right. Not too swift this guy.
My neighbor once hit me coming in (bow first) as he was so focused on turning the bow in with the coffee grinder that he forgot about using his gears... Same thing here... Calm winds, no current and wide entrance! Imagine this guy trying to come in the North Cove with the Hudson ripping?
Or Chelsea with the 3' wakes coming from the tugs and the pilings from the old pier to go up on. Another one of those 'I can afford a 60' yacht. What do I need lessons for?' guys. Just have to love 'em.
Yes, it does. I thought it was the starboard engine in reverse but now I'm not so sure. Either way the guy is still a moron.
Just the typical problem of not beeing able to accept that your maneuver is not going to be as elegant and smooth as you want. Port backwards would habe been the coice. If you missed the right moment to turn you might have bben to fast or did not feel secure enough to follow your decisions consequently. Boating is just a matter of standing behind your decisions when you made them and permanently checking your situation to take differnt decisions if needed. Just doing things as you read them in a tutorial won´t work.
Actually I don't believe he ever used his gears or throttles in that maneuver at all; just stayed ahead idle speed on both. At least he did stay at idle. Usuallly these yokels try to launch for the stratosphere when it goes bad.
You might want to rethink that. Port reverse would send the bow further to the left and he'd still be going forward until it got grab.
Oops, you´re perfectly right, sometimes you make idiotic mistakes when thinking about different things and not writing in your everyday language, but don´t worry. I know the difference between right and left in practice and would have grabbed the right lever. Isn´t it amazing that we both agree, even though we seem to contradict each other?
