Headed for Sardinia, Italy, again in a couple days to address some customer concerns, and try to confirm others. Expect to run at least a few extensive sea trials, and possibly move the boat to the mainland at La Spezia (185nm) for additional support. I have heard before, in various broken Engish warnings, that to operate any vessel of "X" LOA in Italian waters, you must have Italian mariner credentials or own the boat. Am I just being hosed here to pay a local captain to ride along, or will a USCG ticket hold up to the test there? This vessel is under 20 meters, and the owner will not be with me.
This I have never heard of, in the past it was like this in Greece I believe, but boats are moving between France and Italy all the time with their regular crew. If nothing has changed very recently..?
Hi, That will very much depend upon what the USCG Ticket is and what the flag of the vessel is. AFAIK There is no problem for any American Captains running on Cayman or other non Italian Flag boats all over the Med with the appropriate USCG Quals.
Hi, You might have trouble with that Ticket on an Italian Flag Vessel. From what I understand there is no Flagstate Endorsement for that Ticket because it is a peculiar Ticket only issued in the US. The Italians could well prove to be very tricky about that indeed.
K1W1 is correct (as usual) the 100 ton is a domestic US ticket and has no validity outside US waters. Operating the boat without a valid flag state endorsement (if a certificate is required) is looking for trouble. The final answer will be provided by the flag state and the port state, not here. The question is a good one though.
So, not recognized ..... certainly a blow to one's self esteem, with assorted feelings of inadequacy! Thanks for the thoughts, will proceed accordingly.
