    I was in a yard today and spotted a strange looking part on a the hull of a boat there. I have no idea what it can be. Does anyone know?

    Heat exchanger for a small built in refrigeration unit, its an old idea that I have not seen for quite some time.

    Why would you want to have that so close to the waterline?

    To be honest I do not know why but maybe so that it can be visually monitored and cleaned without swimming also it is somewhat protected being above the chine.
