hatteras LRC or ?

    We are looking for trawler yacht and I have narrowed down to a used 42 Lrc or 48 Lrc. Only looking at stabilized yachts but much rather a aft cockpit so stretching it a bit for a 48 but not as many available. The 58 or 65 is my preference but minor detail of money is getting in way. So anyone owned one and how is the ocean crossing capability of these two yachts and how do they handle the sea's compared to a kady Krogen or Nordhavn etc. We will do 95% coastal cruising & island cruising down in carribbean but I definately want to got to south america so I will have a few 300-500 mile open water runs. Just looking for opinions on what is the better riding ocean capable stabilized yacht in the 42-48 range but limited to approx $150K-$250 max.

    Don't think you're going to find a Nordy or a Krogen for that kind of money.
    A 49 DeFever Cockpit will take you down south safely.

    Don't think I have seen a 49 DeFever Cockpit for that kind of money either...

    There aren't many 65s left. M/V Sabbatical was lost in Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Although there were 13 originally built, I think there are maybe 5 remaining. Hatteras built more than 40 of the 58s so there are obviously more available. The trawlers you mention are quite capable of 500 mile open runs. There are also numerous other choices that fit your budget.

    About 7 years ago I had a listing on a 43' Carver aft cabin. I asked the owner why he had two seperate watermakers on board and he told me that was for his big trip. So I had to ask him where he went and he said from Miami to Venezuela and back. I would not suggest that type of boat for long voyages but it can be done by picking your weather. A little more recently a client purchased a new 34' Buddy Davis center console with twin Yamaha outboards. The owner's captain ran the boat on it's own bottom from Fort Lauderdale to Antigua.

    Judy is close to exact. There are at least 6, 65' LRC's still in use. She's right that #309 was lost to Katrina. I know of at least 21, 58' LRC's currently in use and 19, 48's.
    All are late '70's - early 80's and most are still in very nice shape. Both the 58 and 65's have a range of at least 2,000 miles, while the 48's are slightly more limited because of their fuel capacity.

    Melikecookies here and we finally found our boat a 48' Hatteras Lrc down in Panama, Boca Del Toro 1976 known as "Island Spirit" and we are lucky to of gotten here. MY plan is to restore her over the next two years up in Guatemala.
    I was down in July checking her out for a week or so and we finally closed on her. In January we are moving her to Rio Dolce, Guatemala to get her Motors & gears totally rebuilt along with the little westerbeke. The bigger 20kw Onan is shot and will get replaced with something else. Most all systems are working for the most part but I need some work on a few things.
    I look forward to going down in January to move her and get the motors done by summer hopefully so we can go up to Belize & over to Roatan for some summer cruising.
