    Can anyone tell me if Zodiac hull ID's begin with a "Z" or an "X"?

    Go to the USCG MIC page and enter any boat manufacturer and you will find the correct answer. You can also enter the first three letters of any hull number and it will show the boat manufacturer. ;)
