  1. Volvo Penta IPS wins 2005 “Best of What’s New Award”...

Volvo Penta´s Inboard Performance System (IPS) is recognized as one of the Top 100 innovations of the Year by the U.S magazine Popular Science.
Each year, the editors of Popular Science review thousands of products in search of the top 100 technological innovations of the year; breakthrough products and technologies that represent a significant leap in their categories. The "Best of What’s New" awards are presented to 100 new products and technologies in 12 different categories.

This year Popular Science recognized Volvo Penta’s breakthrough drive system for boats, the Volvo Penta IPS, which was launched at the beginning of 2005, as the Grand Award winner in the Recreational category.

“Best of What's New" is the ultimate Popular Science accolade, representing a year's worth of work evaluating thousands of products,” says Mark Jannot, editor of Popular Science. “These awards honor innovations that not only influence the way we live today, but that change the way we think about the future.”

Volvo Penta IPS, the first new marine propulsion system in more than 40 years, includes steerable drive units and pulling propellers. The system replaces traditional shaft and rudder installations and is used in boats in the 35 to 50 foot class.

Compared to shaft installations, boats equipped with Volvo Penta IPS experience dramatically increased efficiency including:

    · up to 20% higher top speed,
    · up to 15% faster acceleration,
    · up to 30% better cruising range, and
    · up to 50% lower perceived sound level.

Currently, over 50 boat manufacturers globally are utilizing the Volvo Penta IPS in their product lines. Many of which will be launching their new boats during the fall and winter boat shows.
