I'm drawing a blank. Perhaps another member has some info for you. Do you know any other details as to length, builder, power, sail, approximate year of build?

    Hi Ledfootman
Sorry, El Patel doesn't ring any bells. But I have a vague memory of a yacht that was owned by the Woolworth family being sunk as an artificial reef somewhere off the east coast some time back.
I would suspect that the Coast Guard would have to be involved in that sort of activity and might have some information.

    Hi,

Would this be the one Codger is talking about?

    South Seas (70 ft)
One of the more infamous of Miami's artificial reefs, the "South Seas" sits in 73 feet of water off Key Biscayne in the artificial reef site with the same name.

This vessel is a 175 foot luxury yacht that was built back in 1928 for the Guggenheim family. It is the sister ship and exact replica of Adolph Hitler's private yacht. The ship changed hands over the years and was even owned by the Woolworth family at one point.

By the 1980's the ship had deteriorated greatly, at that time over 50 years old. Although investors bought her to restore her, she sank in a Miami canal and it was finally decided that the ship be donated to DERM, Department of Environmental Resource Management.

Sunk in February 1983, the South Seas has been scattered across the sand bottom over the years, however, the area is still shrouded by baitfish and barracudas. Because of its shallow depth of less than 73 feet, is a good dive for novices.

That's the one I was thinking of. It's sinking didn't go easily.

This 240ft yacht was owned by Frank.W Woolworths grandchild Barbara Hutton. This beautiful yacht was original named MS Vanadis and build in Germany 1924.
Later named Lady Hutton and is now laying in Stockholm converted to a floating hotel & restaurant.

You might want to have a look at the 'Talitha G' website too. This link

    http://www.talitha-g.com/history.php

takes you straight to her history page which tells of one of her original owners being the head of the Woolworth chain.

She is currently alongside in Barcelona, Spain.
