James Packer has apparently just ordered the largest open yacht in the world, the new 50m Mangusta. This will go with his late father's ex - ice breaker "Arctic P".
Anyone have any details or know more about this?

Press release from the Rogriguez Group website:

Launch of the Mangusta 165’/50 meters Line

"The Group is pleased to announce the launch of the Mangusta 165’ (50 meters) line, the largest Open yacht in the world. This yacht breaks the record already held by Rodriguez Group with its Mangusta 130’.

This model benefits from the size of a Custom yacht (50 meters, for a price of about € 20 million), combined with the recurrence and profitability of a Semi-Custom.

The 1st unit, already sold, will be delivered as early as in the 2006-2007 fiscal year. The objective of the Group is to deliver two Mangusta 165’ a year from 2009, resulting in about € 40 million additional sales."

I would hope that they modify her design somewhat and not just lengthen the design to 165' and call it the largest open!

Kind of agree with you there yachtluver. Even the 130 could be accused of being an inflated version of the 92 design. I would hope that they break out of the mold some for the 165.

I guess they won't, as Mangusta's are a big family, with a strong visual identity...

Is it possible to have a heli on an open yacht of this size?

A chopper would be unusual, but I think the necessary space is there.

That would be awkward to land on a Mangusta...but if the pilot is good then...

It probably wouldn't be any more difficult than landing on Alloy's Tiara.

There is an article about the new 165 in the January issue of Yachts International. In a few words...sorry yachtluver, it looks very similar.

    A few facts:
    1. 30 ft. beam
    2. pilothouse on flybridge with optional hard top
    3. weighs 295 tons
    4. has triple 750 MTU 16V 4000 engines with KaMeWa jet drives
    5. top speed - 35 kts
    6. cruise speed - 30 kts.
    7. 5 staterooms and what looks like an office
    8. 4 crew staterooms
    9. galley on lower deck behind crew staterooms
    10. skylights over dining table with seating for 12
    11. Doesn't seem to have any tender storage
    12. Has a lot of seating everywhere you look!

No launch date was mentioned so keep your eyes open!
