My liferaft is due for recertification. When doing it through the boat yard the price for a recertification 3 years ago was approximately $2000. At the Stuart boat show Datrex was selling 6 person suit case style life rafts for $2200. 2 questions for the forum. When the price is virtually the same why not just buy new. It goes against my grain to throw good stuff away, but other than that what am I missing. Do any of you know about Datrex. Presently I have a Revere Coastal Commander. Thanks in advance.
Newer materials, Newer technology, fresh supplies. Bottom line, This could be LIFE SUPPORTING. We all like to satisfy surveys but when the ship hits the fan, what do you want to be secure in?
Assuming it's no larger then a 6 man raft, sounds like you paid too much. Viking Service in Miami did mine about 4 months ago. Took about 3 weeks and cost 1200. plus another 85.00 for the new Hammar HydroRelease. They used to charge 50.00 to pick up and deliver back but wanted 400.00 last time so I took a 35 min. drive.
The Reveres are much cheaper to maintain than the zodiacs. We used to have a pair of zodiacs 6 pax which had to be done every year. Last time in 2021, cost was $2500 each and it would always take about a month due to parts availability. So, we basically had no rafts for a month every year! current boat has a pair of Revere which are good for 3 years, last cost in 2022 was $1500 each.
Thank you all for the responses. Are you all getting the self righting rafts? Datrex offers a 6 person offshore and a 6 person offshore self righting. The extent of my offshore cruising is running the coast and going to the Bahamas.
When it got really old I replaced the Viking Offshore with a Viking Coastal and make up for its less items with a bunch more in a ditch bag. Also replaced the duffel type bag with a fiberglass canister & a hydro-release. The raft, like I believe most are these days, is a 3 yr. service but the hydro only 2 years. I also supply Viking with a PLB to pack in it.
Meh, it's not quite that simple. Different manufacturers, different features, different cycles of inspection periods. Many variables. If I had mine rectified every year or perhaps even three years, the cost would likely be somewhat less than waiting for and paying for a 5 year event. If I stripped the contents and relied solely on the ditch bag, I'd save money as well with regard to the recertification.
