    Hi everyone
    Still rebuilding my previously submerged boat, I had a someone remove all my rusty anchor chain months ago and I am getting ready to install new chain but I am insure where it's secured, I believe it was attached to the windlass bolt? But I didn't take it out myself so I am unsure if there is a better option ,
    any other suggestions?

    Normally there is something on the bulkhead that it is attached to, the windlass bolt might be too close to the hause pipe and cause it to bind. I would recommend nylon line behind the chain and attaching that to something. Nylon is easy to cut in an emergency.

    I would not recommend more than 30-40 feet of chain on a 46 Post.

    You really want to keep the weight down in the front of a 46 Post.

    I use 60ft of 5/16 SS316 chain without any problem for 2 years now...

    My rope end is just connected to a lose piece of wood, that prevents the rope to slip out of the windlass

    Mine too Chain tied a short piece of nylon rope tied around a small block of lose wood. Very basic.

    Out here on on the pacific are you guy running 100' of chain and 200-300' of rope to keep you off the rocks in an emergency?

    I would have 100' of chain and 600' of rope if it were me.

    Matt, where are you going to be doing your anchoring? Google tells me you're 22 miles east of Sacramento. The Delta and Bay would be a lot different than the Farailones. Either area, I would be thinking a lot about what kind of hook, and if offshore, a "Plan B" retrieval system. It seems that the best mud anchors foul the worst in rocks.

    Most west coast boats carry 300' of ground tackle if they do any kind of cruising. You'll see all chain rigs more on the west coast too.

    I am also 900ft above sea level ..lol I am considering taking the boat to Southern California and Baja Mexico this winter,my boat is currently in Sausalito

    My rode attaches to a metal pipe with an eye bolt screwed into the bulk head. I live in the north east and anchor in shallow water, never over 30' deep so I put 100' of G3 chain with a 65lb lewmar plow, holds like a champ in the muck and sand around here.

    I still would like to have at least 300' of rope behind the chain. Easy to let all of the chain out and tie the rope off without having to deal with a bridle, or if you do happen to be in deeper water. 100' chain is simply not enough for any what if situations. IMO.

    Is 65' of 3/8 overkill on the chain size, I plan to stay east coat, Maine to Key west., the. Going with 5/8 brait, 250 feet and Installing a maxwell windlass Rc10-10-10 so it'll do both chain and rope. I'm upgrading as I don't want the stress of trying to pull up chain with a 45 lb delta.

    Anyone that would like to make an offer on the Ideal windlass which is in great shape let me know, I'm in Mystic, CT.
