  1. Horizon Yachts 105' Trideck
    More Altitude on the Horizon!

    by Capt. Chuck Gnaegy

While almost every megayacht producer encourages a dash of buyer participation in the build, the owner of Horizon’s new 105 Tri-Deck initiated a number of structural design ideas. He worked together with the design team to make this extraordinary yacht his dream boat.

Horizon’s 105 Tri-Deck follows the well-conceived pattern of classic megayachts. She trips lightly in, without over-ostentatious flare, yet transmits the essence of high style; the aura of ultimate top quality. She is the first of this tri-deck series. Subtle differences throughout reflect the unusual union of designer/owner-shared contributions. For one example, owner Steve Scarpa worked with the Horizon design team to revise the rising sheer angle of the bow by extending it one foot, intended to alter and streamline the already sleek silhouette.

Another individual preference by Scarpa changed the stateroom line-up to include merely a trio of lodgings – all king-size – seemingly unusual on a yacht this size. Amidships, the Master suite is beam-width, while the VIP suite stretches forward at the bow. Both feature the luxury of full-size Jacuzzi tubs, along with etched-glass shower enclosures. Other innovations will be noted as we make our further foray into this excellent yacht design.
  2. Horizon models previously reviewed by YachtForums include the 62’ and 70’ yachts, both of which also utilize the 105’s “SCRIMP” resin-infused molding y process. (This “Seaman Composites Resin Infusion Molding Process” was developed by the U.S. Navy to produce double-strength fiberglass without additional weight, plus a reduction in emissions of 80%). The yachts are constructed of one-piece solid FRP below the waterline, with Divinycell closed cell composite stringers, sides, and bulkheads. They can be built to DNV/HSLC of Lloyds class and MCA compliance.

A long-time and long-revered megayacht builder with yards in Taiwan, Horizon is more well known in Europe and Asia than in the U.S., but its resume’ is nevertheless impressive. Two separate yards there specialize in different size yachts. The 105 was built in a facility producing yachts over 70 feet. A state of the art plant for fiberglass yachts, with 300,000 sq.ft. of lamination production, it is ISO 9001-certified, and also boasts massive tanks for actual in-water hull testing.
  3. This is 105 owner Scarpa’s second Horizon in a row. His first was a 92-footer, and for him that yacht became a learning process as well as a voyager. As he cruised the West Coast up to Alaska, and back to the Sea of Cortez and Mexico, he began conjuring his next objective – this 105. To that end he even invited Horizon’s project manager, James Fwu, to visit and advise him on the practicality of his ideas. They included interior innovations and subtle structural departures as well.

High up on the Flying Bridge, a full set of nav tools and a weatherproof Stidd helm chair invite the ultimate in yachting’s sunning experience. Full 360 degree views allow the skipper to easily follow his itinerary carry-through, with all instrumentation readily available. Curved sun pads offer relaxation, while a short couch /companion seat incorporates the driver’s place as part of the party crowd.
  4. Behind the skipper at the top of the SkyLounge, just under the shading radar/nav fixture, a comfortable settee and embellished cherrywood table provide for party games, kibitzing, and applause. Shown here are the Furuno radar, INMARSAT sat-nav pods on the SUS318 arch. Twin search lights and Burell triple Tube air horns are mounted on both sides.
  5. Still on the flybridge deck, aft, a wonderful view awaits an open area with guard rails: Just the ticket for cheering-on the adventurous souls who brave the briny deep for water sports. Situated directly beneath the flybridge deck, on the skylounge deck is is the hydraulic Nautical EZ-2500, 12’ launching davit for jet skis, PWCs, or a 22’ RIB inflatable.
  6. The full-width console houses all instrumentation as well as alarms and monitors for ship’s systems. Functions are laid out and displayed on five dedicated full color screens before the Stidd fully adjustable pilot chair and stainless steel wheel. This information is also transmitted to the captain’s quarters via a 19” LCD screen; and to the master suite on a 42” plasma TV. To starboard, a planning station stands ready with computer and nav screens. Comfortable couch seating is to port, while just aft a semi-circular settee provides for further entertainment gatherings. It serves as an extra berth as well, with bed-cushion comfort.
  7. The gracious salon retains its classic aura as richly patterned carpeting underlies the overall ecru theme, accented with light cherrywood. Its 84” headroom adds to the impression of greater volume than most yachts this size. Deep-cushioned couches form an L-shape, with numerous designer pillows. The lightly glossed coffee table is reflected overhead by an identical cherrywood mode, with mirrors and lighting, all designed by the owner. Storage and TV as well as wood and granite countertops, plus teak flooring, emphasize the traditional flavor of casual restraint. Here and throughout, Scarpa directed the patina of wood finishes to bring about a medium 70-30 gloss/matte for his preferred elegant presentation. A 50” plasma TV with surround-sound provides screen entertainment.
  8. Salon Close Up...
  9. Two staunch wood columns separate the salon from the dining area, springing from cabinets which contain full service for a sumptuous dining experience. The decorative carpet pattern of the salon extends to the dining room also, as does the ceiling treatment, unifying design elements into a complete theme. Beyond the splendid granite table, a glass locker with mirrors divides the space with a stand-up bar, which features stools and a footrail. Dining area lighting is dimmer-controlled. The cherrywood island bar includes a S/S sink with a U-line wine cooler as well as an icemaker.
  10. A spacious, true country-kitchen style galley is just what the customer ordered as an informal gathering place for breakfast or lunch breaks. Utile cabinetry hovers over the bar, again per the owner’s informal, yet gracious living plan. Full food prep arrangements include Sub-Zero refrigeration, gas cook top with convection and microwave oven, and of course a dishwasher. Around the bar, with a foot rest, are five bongo-drum type stools sporting leather padded seats. Just across a short aisle, forward, is a U-shaped settee and a golden oak-granite table for more informal breakfasts or snacks.
  11. Horizon 105’s master suite is the model for all three staterooms on the yacht. Each sports a king-size 80” x 76” island berth and high density hotel mattress, with a smoke-mirror on the ceiling above the bed. Headboards are fabric or mirror, per the sleeper’s choice. There is also a dressing room with a full-size wall mirror, shoe locker, safe, and drawers. Lighting is Italian halogen stars on the overhead, activated by push button switches.. Each suite sports a 50” TV/DVD/CD player w/ surround-sound stereo. Indirect lighting schemes illuminate sofas, beds, and curtain valances. Hanging lockers also provide drawer space for essentials.
  12. Swathed in semi-gloss cherrywood, the master head is also a model for the other two ensuite heads. Large mirrors cover capacious medicine cabinets above marble countertops, with Grohe faucet fixtures, towel bars and towel rings. Sinks are inlaid ovals set in handsome, curved wood–faced cabinets. Floors are also marble, with a 3” wide deco edge. The master and VIP forward heads boast a Jacuzzi as well as an enclosed, etched-glass shower.
  13. Almost a clone of the master suite, the VIP stateroom, nestled forward at the bow sports the king-size walk-around island berth, décor in cherrywood and soft beige. There is also an open book shelf, plus hanging lockers on both sides. A nice touch is the automatic light sensor switch at the entrance, though daytime light aplenty beams through the wide windows.

The third stateroom, a guest room situated between the master and VIP, also offers the luxury of a king-size berth, ensuite head, and hanging lockers. Crew’s quarters include an efficiency galley, refrigerator/freezer and Miele countertop cook stove. Captain’s quarters are furnished with a double berth and hanging locker and storage; plus DVD and wave radio, stereo, and head/shower. The crew’s cabin provides upper/lower Pullman berths, Sony entertainment area, and an extra microwave under the counter. There is also a washer/dryer combination.
  14. In the H-105’s walk-around engine room, the big twin CAT 1550 hp C-30s purr in tandem, sound and vibration-muffled by multi-layers of foam/lead-combination insulation. ZF 2500 reduction gears w/2.536 gear ratio, SAE-C PTO are activated for thrusters and stabilizing power, w/all information transmitted directly to the SkyLounge/back deck & tri-deck command centers via MMC remote control systems.

Engine loads are distributed through flex-mounts on stainless steel plates bonded to the hull girder. Watertight bulkhead entrance doors, diamond deck plates, and full-length stainless steel grab rails add to safety measures. Engine room ventilation and moisture eliminators are activated by two 15” blowers.

Horizon’s new 105 Tri-Deck design is a delight to her owner who, after all, bore such a defining hand in her overall design. Beyond that, she is sure to offer inspiration to other aspiring yacht owners who are looking for luxury, performance, and beauty.
