Those boys are shifting, some serious speeds. Would love to have a go on one of those boats.

It looked for a while as if he could do the unthinkable and maybe -just maybe- beat the crewed record too.
Just 1 day behind at Cape Horn, 3 days 12 hours and change at the finish.

Is it a record for decades, or will the Ultimes coming online next year beat him faster? We'll find out.
Esp. Gitana 17 should be interesting. If the foils work out and hold together for the distance this may be a very short record. (The only new launch that is supposed to be fully foiling. But who knows what the teams are actually doing.)

    Taking a ride.
This obviously depends a lot on the team. Seems to be relatively easy if they are in the area to chase a record, where waiting is involved. Lending Club 2 (ex Groupama 3, now IDEC 3) did a lot of sponsor activity / school classes / outreach day sailing in 2015.
If a boat is in the area, send them a message and ask.

I really can't imagine foiling around the world. particularly single-handed.

On the foiling subject how about this video

    56 knots,....65 miles per hour...under sail!!

Some off the 60' monohull Imocas currently racing the vendee globe have foils. Problem is that they keep hitting debris... there has been a number of retirnements due to foil and keel damage after hitting UFOs. Hugo Boss has been sailing with one sheared foil since the Indian Ocean and is now just 150nm behind the leader off Brazil.

Amazing race. I guess the trimaran is less prone to damage since it doesn't have the huge canting keel on the imocas

The first boats have arrived (a bit ago) in the Vendee Globe.
The winner took 74 days 3h and change this year, almost 4 full days under the old record.

In crewed RTW records IDEC is currently crushing the existing record of 45 days 13h set in 2012 by Banque Populaire V.
Under 300nm to go, over 30kts on the speedo, just 40 days 13h on the clock. Even taking weather into account it looks like 40 day x hour record. Website with tracker and stuff.
    Btw: A crew of 6.

For comparison, the fastest RTW motorboat Earthrace needed 60 days 23h in 2008.

    Incredible accomplishment.

I watched the first few competitors arriving at Les Sables, the crowds were amazing, it s nice to see that in some countries sailing is so popular.

The Volvo made a stop in Miami a few years ago, we went out to the finish and were ashamed by how few boats and shore side spectators there were.
