Sharp Yacht Design has been commissioned to design the largest sportfish yacht ever contemplated. The new vessel, which is being designed for a well-known California yachtsman, will be 171 feet in length with a beam of 31.5 feet. Innovative design and the use of exotic materials and new building techniques will be necessary to deliver the combination of speed, luxury, and versatility planned for the project.

Twenty-five years after his long range sportfish designs first appeared, company founder and Principal Naval Architect, Doug Sharp, calls the new 171 foot project, “a seminal design that will redefine the sportfisher genre by increasing the speed, range, voyaging capabilities and luxury accommodations of the type to levels never before dreamed of”.

His client, a noted California yachtsman, states, “I wanted a design that really pushed the envelope of performance and luxury and something that would be THE outstanding example of her type for years to come. Given the aesthetic, technological and engineering goals we set for this project, I know of no other yacht designer who has the technical ability and experience necessary to design a sportfisher of these dimensions. It just had to be Doug Sharp”.

Two main engines of 3,648 horsepower (2,720 KW) are contemplated by the design concept. At 171 feet (51.1m) in length and with a beam of 31.5 feet (9.6m) they are necessary to deliver the comfortable 25 knot cruising speed and 32 knot top speed’ specified by the client, according to Sharp. Sharp explains that the modern sportfish is “the triathlete of the yachting world”. It must deliver speed, endurance and agility in several operational modes while providing passengers and crew with comfort, security and safety on long passages”.

“The extreme requirements for a sportfish of 171 feet will require significant technological research and a great deal of cooperation with suppliers, especially with respect to hull materials, HVAC, maneuvering and propulsion machinery” says Benjamin Chisholm, head of Sharp Design’s Engineering and Systems Department. It is anticipated that several months of research such work will take place before all specifics of the design are finalized. The client has mandated that any and all solutions be considered in order to meet the speed and range parameters set out in his design brief. If performance cannot be met with conventional propulsion arrangements, the client has authorized the detailed engineering study of alternate means including water jets and/or pod drives.

Luxury is to be another hallmark of the design. Sharp Design has created a layout incorporating a very large owner’s suite with adjoining baths, four guest suites with included baths, 5 crew cabins, 2 galleys, 3 day heads (similar to a half bath) and several socializing areas including large main salon, entertainment and game area and wet bars. Dave Woessner, head of Sharp Design’s Interiors Department, looks forward to, “applying the standards of luxury we formerly employed only on our largest yacht designs to an athletic, muscular sportfish type”.
