    The owner of the boat is from Chicago. It stays down there for awhile every year and then arrives in Milwaukee. When it's here I will get some pictures.

    Saw this yacht tied up near the Coast Guard station in Milwaukee off and on over the last couple of weeks.

    Yep, I saw it too. Was just leaving MKE Airport, northbound on I-794 on my way to Oshkosh yesterday. Hardly a subtle sight around these parts!

    Rodger. It's been a while since I've done the canal, but I don't recall fender boards being necessary. Should I be considering them for our upcoming trip through?

    Sufficient number of fenders plus spares should be adequate. Sufficient number? One very 4-6 feet would be my ideal

    There could be a number of reasons he used them.


    There only seems to have small fenders so grouping them is one way to increase the horizontal size.

    The Skipper might not have been up there before and was erring on the side of caution.

    Things might have changes since your last trip and the whole system is full of large splintered wood and rough concrete on the sides.

    The Skipper might have no idea what he/she doing.

    The main reason they use fender boards is to keep fenders clean.
    The reason I do not like using fender boards in the Welland Canal is because of the turbulance in the locks. When they fill the locks it is designed to push the boat to the wall and you can not get it off the wall even with bow thruster. I worry that if the yacht surges in one direction the fender boards coming in contact with the hull. On large yachts like Blue Moon you can request a slow fill and boat will stay off the wall. But in locks 4-5-6 they can not do slow fills so the yacht will be against the wall.
    I have seen yachts damaged using fender boards.
    On large yachts is is hard to find a spot to tie off the fenders, so most large yachts have the fenders with the leather straps that fit the railing, and when yacht is going up in the lock I have see the leather fender straps open up and fender rope ending up in lock. Last week there was a 75' Yacht ahead of me and the fender borad got caught in a crack in concrete wall breaking the line on one side cusing the fender board to hang by one rope and scratched the side of the yacht.

    Hi,

    You will find that those leather looking fender hooks are actually leather enclosed Stainless Steel, They are a popular and tidy way to mount fenders on a smooth topside and varnished rails.

    To open one out and pull it off requires a lot of force if they fit properly.

    "Blue Moon" is Umm....60.35-meters, just short of 200-feet long.

    Yes I no what those hooks are made of, but when you are in the bottom of a lock on the Welland Canal you raise up 45 feet in ten minitues with 21 million gallons of water in each lock. In the Welland canal you raise 325' in the first seven miles of the canal and 7 locks that pin you to the wall.
