GREAT pics Berndt!! What do you know about the owner of SKAT? I'm familar with some of Lurssen Naval ships and you can clearly see the military design influence in SKAT, but I wonder why the owner would build a luxury yacht that looks like a naval frigate? Here's a few specs on SKAT...

this is my first post so I'll make it short...well it is a reply after all.

I found this great article on-line. It was published by a US magazine. It was about the 100 largest private motor yachts.

The owner of the Skat is a Microsoft millionaire. In 2003 Skat was the 7th largest. After Larry's new 451 footer (138m) taking over fellow Microsoft'er Paul Allen, by 40 foot.

OK so you want this guys name? Here it is: Charles Simonyi. Charles is the chief architect of Microsoft.

The article mentioned 'yacht-watchers have taken issue with her grey paint scheme, while others dislike the way her windows jut out. '

And here's what they said to that: 'To them, we say: Get your own yacht.' '

Oh well...I thought it looked quite military and stealth like. Who knows maybe Microsoft really is keen on running the world and need a huge invisible-to-radar and invisible-to-the-naked-eye-from-a-distance command and control centre. LOL

Meahwhile whilst I'm starting out to research the basics of naval architecture and perhaps even go on to picking up a few things on...hydrodynamics...phew interesting stuff mate...so can you recommend any books or websites for a young lad?

I want to build...well not me...LOL...told by a fellow Ryzer that directed me to this forum that Lurssen are a good bunch...so they'll build it...I just want to understand what I want and can do...help in the designing of it. So may even hire you...get you on board or just advise by a look over to make sure everything is all good.

SKAT in Copenhagen

I first saw Lurssen SKAT in Copenhagen harbor in 2003. No one seemed to know who the owner was and the crew were tight lipped.

This year I heard that the yacht was back in front of the new opera building and went to take a look. Then I heard rumors that it was owned by Bill Gates. I found the answer on this forum.

There is nothing attractive about this boat. It has an intimidating look. Its cold exterior is a wau of telling people - look away! Vut that does not stop thousands of tourists at the Copenhagen harbor from gawking at the boat and wondering if it is the queens boat. It is not. The royal yacht is an old steam boat - a poor distant cousin of this monster which is usually parked on the opposite side. This time there was a yacht Lady Sunshine next to it but more approproately - the cruise ships to Oslo and Gdansk use the same harbor.

I was curious enough to look the pictures of the boat and its interiors. I am no art critic but throwing this kind of money to live inside your corporate board room is kind of tacky. I plan on getting on yacht - and I ticked this one of my list.

And to the Microsoft designer I have this to say. Park it in Greelend.

Welcome aboard! I first saw Skat in Ft. Lauderdale and the location of the boat is what appeared to be so awkward. Naval ships are stationed inside the port, but Skat was in a civilian location...at the Marriot Marina.

I can understand how some would dislike the appearance, i.e., the battleship theme, but I think the design is an ingenious ploy. In the Caribbean and on high seas around the world, there have been reports over the years of piracy, but with Skat... no pirate in his right mind would consider an attempt on this boat!

Although its presence is menacing, it is vastly different and one of the most memorable yachts ever launched. Don't get me wrong, my preference includes everything from sleek euro-yachts to ice-breaking expeditions, but I applaud Lurssen and the design team behind Skat for creating something truly different and unique.

There are a number of boats that hurt my eyes, but I still appreciate the diversity in design, the engineering talent and the desires of each owner that commissions a new build.

Just my opinion, but I'm often wrong.

This misty morning SKAT arrived in Stockholm. She was here last summer as well.
Skat in danish means treasury, especially as an expression of the one you love, if it is a certain female or the boat I don´t know in this case. Maybe both...

First I thought the yacht looked like a military vessel. (A lot of military ships visit Stockholm during the summer), then it looked more like a cruisingship. I think the letters SKAT looks very cheap on such a ship! But, it is still impressing!

I'm new to this so please bear with me and my awkward postings.

Just saw SKAT from the window of my hotel here in Stockholm. The boat really is impressive. I actually find it rather refreshing that someone chooses a completely different style and design.

I've learned that SKAT has been present in the Scandinavian waters for some time now. Do you know what brings those "guys" here. Having Pelorus and SKAT in the same harbour in such a short time cannot be just coincidence. Any thoughts?

I am just guessing, but often you see boats from Lürssen around here, both when just delivered and maybe when they revisit the yard?
But there has been a dozen other superyachts in Stockholm this summer, and if I recall right, almost a hundred cruise ships. Could be for our beautiful and unique archipelago (24.000 islands!) and also to be able to dock in the town center.

Must be the famous Arquipelago, I guess. As far as I know, Luerssen is based in Bremen, Germany which is not really round the corner. Maybe the superowners of the superyachts have found out that there is an alternative to the côte d'azure...and a very nice one as well!

Haven't been to the islands in the archiepalgo but will definitely try it next summer...albeit on a smaller boat, probably...

Yes, in the summer this is a much better place than the Côte d´Azur, not too hot, maybe not hot at all like this summer..., less crowded and above all, silent!
To move around you don´t need a boat of your own, take a steamferry. They are both going regular trips or special cruises with dinner and live music. Small hotels and restaurants are popping up everywhere nowadays so you can move around for a couple of weeks.
Season is from mid june to mid august, welcome!

He is a billionaire - started as pennyless Hungarian refugee... US citizen... used to work in Denmark...

Never married, geek... no children... had a long romantic relationship with Martha Stewart !!!

He "invented" Excel... that is where the money is from...
